What is the Disappearing meme?
The Disappearing meme (also called Nileseyy Niles Disappears or Peace Out) shows comedian Niles Stewart giving a peace sign and then gradually fading to transparent until only the background remains. It is used to express ghosting, making a quick exit, or mentally checking out of an awkward situation.
Origin & history
The meme originates from Vine videos posted by comedian Nileseyy Niles (Niles Stewart) on April 28, 2015. In a series of three Vines, Niles holds up a peace sign and uses a visual effect to disappear from confusing or aggressive situations. The first Vine alone received 1.8 million loops, and the format quickly spread on Black Twitter and beyond.
Niles later released a YouTube video titled "Disappearing: The Origin" explaining the bit. The multi-panel image macro version - showing him fully visible, then semi-transparent, then gone - became a universal reaction format for ghosting, avoiding responsibility, or leaving awkward conversations without a word. It remains one of the most recognizable "I'm out of here" memes on social media.
