Brazilian illustrator Genildo Ronchi created the cartoon in August 2013, showing two men on a bus looking out opposite windows - one sees rocks and looks miserable, the other sees a beautiful landscape and smiles. The original Portuguese caption, "As vezes só depende de nós" ("Sometimes it just depends on us"), framed it as a motivational message about perspective.

Years later, internet users stripped away the wholesome intent and turned the image into an exploitable template by labeling each window with contrasting viewpoints on the same topic. Variants like "Happy Guy Showing Sad Guy His Phone" later placed both men on the same side, but the core meme remains a visual "glass half full vs half empty" comparison.
