Disappointed Black Guy (also called Happy Then Shocked) is a two-panel reaction meme showing the same man smiling with excitement in the top frame, then looking shocked and disappointed in the bottom frame. It captures the emotional whiplash of expecting good news and then learning the catch or downside.

Origin & History

The photos were taken by Tumblr user Ted Dorfeuille (tediferous) on December 28, 2011. He staged the reaction after receiving a racist anonymous message he initially thought was from a friend, then posted the happy and disappointed selfies as a joke for his small follower base. A popular blogger reshared the post, and the images spread far beyond Tumblr.

The full format is usually four panels (desirable thing, happy reaction, disappointing reveal, sad reaction), but the two-panel crop of just the facial expressions became its own widely used template.
