The clip comes from a 2007 episode of Ratones Coloraos, a Spanish TV program hosted by Jesús Quintero. Juan Joya Borja, nicknamed El Risitas ('The Giggler'), recounted a comedic story about working at a beach restaurant and accidentally sending paella pans into the sea. His high-pitched, wheezing laugh while telling the story became the focal point of the segment.

Years later, internet users paired the laughing screenshot with unrelated subtitles - often mocking corporate failures or absurd news - to create 'Spanish Laughing Guy' memes. The image became the basis for the KEKW emote on Twitch and spread across Reddit, Twitter, and gaming communities as shorthand for finding someone's misfortune or mistake uproariously funny. El Risitas passed away in April 2021, but the reaction image remains widely used.
